BIOGRAPHY
Davide Canali was born in Anagni in 1981. His predisposition for art studies led him to attend the
Academy of Fine Arts in Frosinone, where he graduated in 2004 with a thesis on Theory and the
mass-media approach in relation to the art
world. Although his main interest is directed towards photography and video,
he studied sculpture in the Academy, also attending courses at the Academy of
Carrara, where he experimented chalk practise and marble processing.
In 2003 he participated in a group exhibit for students, with the “Concave Space”
work at the Archaeological Museum of Castro dei Volsci. Afterwards, in the same year,
he presented the “Kamicaze” work at the Academies Sixth Symposium, held in Suvereto
(LU). This work gave life to the “Kamicaze 2” installation for the 8Arte event.
In 2004 he went back to work on the video image with the documentary “the Rom Italy” on
the sociohistorical situation of the Rom communities in Italy, with special attention to
the artistic heritage of the Sinti. This is a 20 minutes’ documentary, selected by Citizen
Report, which aired on RAI Educational.
From 2004 to 2008 he has worked as a programmer, operator and editor for various national
newspapers, such as TG1 and TG2.
Between 2008 and 2009 he has reverted to his days as sculptor with the “Migrants” work for the
conference organized by the Culturale Attivart Association of Giuliano di Roma (Fr), sponsored by
the Lazio Region, in the opening of the Museum of Ernica Volcanology.
He performed an installation of 73 elements made by iron and lava stone, confirming a
special attention to social problems due to people migration.
2010 is an important year for Davide, who passed from using the analog system to the digital one.
He organized a study tour and research in Lisbon, confirming its sensitivity to disadvantaged social
groups, choosing the Portuguese capital for its colonial past, as well for a personal tribute to the
writer Tabucchi, who he started to love after reading Requiem. The report was carried out in
the suburbs, crossroads of African migration. His first solo exhibition “Lomo and
Zenith” came from this experience, curated by Loredana Galassini, at the Utopian City of Rome.
In 2010 he directed the photography in the documentary “The Best of Youth of Monstar” by
Giuseppe Valente, on the new ethnic identity of the people of Monstar, after the bloody events of
90’s.
In 2011, he won the special prize Pietro Cross with the video “If I were you” for
Loredana Galassini. The video was made for
the scientific committee against vivisection, sponsored by Equivita.
In 2013, he realized “Esaclorocitoesano”, an installation-report on pollution of the Sacco valley, for
the day of the culture of Frosinone.
In 2014 he dedicated himself to the analog-digital comparison, with
the installation “Analog Solitude, the Poetics of Duale” at the Mancinelli palace in Ferentino (Fr),
for the 15th edition of 8Arte.
In 2015 the travelling exhibition “Lampedusa”, organized in collaboration with Giancarlo
Canepa, was a complaint against segregation, cause of all forms of racism.
In 2016 he realized the documentary “Enaria” about ethnic and geographic identity of the island of
Ischia. This work is selected in the NIS Serbian festival,
and chosen as semifinalist documentary at “Cinefest” in Los Angeles.

He has started to produce
short artistic videos from 2015 , which are very conceptual and effective in their content. Consistent
with his thinking and his choices, the theme concerns the drama of the human condition,
a reflection on the migration of peoples, which he defines in his blog as the bondage
in all its expressions.

From 2017, some private passages, inspire him in the production of a series of courts on
Man, resulting from the interaction between the external world, in which he moves and relates, and
the internal world made of pains, desires and resilience.

In 2021 created the identidellaterra.com project together with the Italian / Portuguese artist
Helena Valsecchi. An art project on the origins of the sacred, in an anthropological vision. Result of
a collaborative creation residency on the west coast of Portugal, April 2021.
PHOTOGRAPHY
During his study and research trips in Africa (Morocco) and in Europe, its reportagedenounce
were made in suburban areas, where social contrasts are
more evident, manifesting an indignation towards all forms of human exploitation in his shots.

Biografia
Davide Canali nasce ad Anagni nel 1981. La sua predisposizione per gli studi artistici lo porta a
frequentare l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Frosinone, dove si laurea nel 2004 con una tesi su Teoria e
metodo dei mass-media in relazione al mondo dell’arte. Sebbene il suo interesse sia
prevalentemente rivolto verso la fotografia e il video, in Accademia studia scultura, seguendo corsi
anche presso l’Accademia di Carrara, dove sperimenta l’uso del gesso e la lavorazione del marmo.
Nel 2003 partecipa ad una mostra collettiva, riservata agli studenti, con l’opera “Spazio Concavo”,
presso il Museo Archeologico di Castro dei Volsci. Nello stesso anno, dopo l’esperienza di Carrara,
presenta l’opera “Kamicaze” in occasione del sesto simposio delle Accademie, tenuto a Suvereto
(LU), opera che dar vita all’ installazione “Kamicaze 2” , per l’evento 8Arte.
Nel 2004 torna all’immagine video con il documentario “L’Italia Rom” sulla situazione
storicosociale delle comunit Rom in Italia, con particolare attenzione al patrimonio artistico dei
Sinti. Documentario di 20 min., selezionato da Citizen Report, andato in onda su Rai Educational.
Dal 2004 al 2008 lavora come programmatore, montatore e operatore per varie testate giornalistiche
nazionali, quali TG1 e TG2.
Tra il 2008 e il 2009 torna alla scultura con l’opera “Migranti”, per il convegno organizzato
dall’Associazione Culturale Attivart, di Giuliano di Roma (Fr), patrocinato dalla Regione Lazio, in
occasione dell’apertura del Museo di Vulcanologia Ernica. Realizza una installazione di 73 elementi
in ferro e pietra lavica, confermando un’attenzione particolare verso i problemi sociali dovuti alle
migrazioni di popoli.
Il 2010 un anno importante per Davide, che passa dall’uso del sistema analogico a quello digitale.
Organizza un viaggio di studio e ricerca a Lisbona, confermando la sua sensibilit verso le categorie
sociali svantaggiate, scegliendo la capitale portoghese per il suo passato coloniale, oltre che per un
tributo personale a Tabucchi, scrittore che ha amato dopo la lettura di Requiem. Il reportage stato
realizzato nei quartieri periferici, crocevia delle migrazioni africane. Da questa esperienza
scaturisce la sua prima mostra personale “Lomo e Zenith”, curata da Loredana Galassini, presso la
Città dell’Utopia di Roma.
Sempre nel 2010 dirige la fotografia nel documentario “La Meglio Giovent di Monstar” di
Giuseppe Valente, sulla nuova identit etnica degli abitanti di Monstar, dopo i fatti sanguinosi degli
anni ’90.
Nel 2011, con il video “Se fossi tu” per Loredana Galassini, vince il premio speciale Pietro Croce. Il
video realizzato per il comitato scientifico contro la vivisezione, sponsorizzato da Equivita.
Nel 2013, per la giornata della cultura di Frosinone, realizza “Esaclorocitoesano”, una installazione
– denuncia sull’inquinamento della valle del Sacco.
Nel 2014 si dedica al confronto analogico – digitale, con l’installazione “Solitudine Analogica, la
Poetica del Duale” presso il palazzo Mancinelli di Ferentino (Fr), per la 15 edizione di 8Arte.
Nel 2015 la installazione itinerante “Lampedusa”, realizzata con Giancarlo Canepa, una denuncia
contro la ghettizzazione, causa di ogni forma di razzismo.
“Enaria” del 2016, documentario sulla identit etnica e geografica dell’isola di Ischia, viene
selezionato nel festival serbo NIS, e scelto quale doc. semifinalista al “Cinefest” di Los Angeles.
Videoart
Dal 2015 inizia a produrre brevi video artistici, molto concettuali ed efficaci nel loro contenuto. Il
tema, coerente con il suo pensiero e le sue scelte, riguarda la drammaticit della condizione umana,
una riflessione sulla migrazione dei popoli, che definisce, nel suo blog, schiavit in tutte le sue
manifestazioni.

DAL 2017, alcuni trascorsi privati, lo ispirano nella produzione di una serie di corti sull’Uomo,
risultante dell’interazione tra il Mondo esterno, in cui si muove e si relaziona, e il Mondo interno
fatto di dolori, desideri e resilienza.

Nel 2021 realizza il progetto www.identidellaterra.com insieme all’artista italo/portoghese Helena
Valsecchi.
Un progetto d’arte sulle origini del sacro, in una visione antropologica.
Risultato di una residenza di creazione collaborativa nella costa occidentale del Portogallo, aprile
2021.

Durante i suoi viaggi di studio e ricerca, in Africa (Marocco) ed in Europa, i suoi reportage –
denuncia sono stati realizzati in luoghi periferici, dove i contrasti sociali sono pi evidenti,
manifestando con i suoi scatti una indignazione verso ogni forma di sfruttamento umano.
